Week 5 Reading Response

Week 5 Reading Response

Q Welcome to Week 5. Now let's learn how to interact with specific passages from a text. "To my mind, a writer who never uses contractions is akin to someone whose outer seriousness has no inner humor under it. But the other side of the coin is equally true: a writer who constantly uses them is like someone whose outer humor has no inner seriousness under it" -- John Trimble (81). Week 5 Objectives: By the end of Week 5, you will: • Learn how to quote and paraphrase from a text, as well as how to incorporate those elements into a cohesive paragraph. • Learn what "superstitions" you may have been taught about writing that are, in certain circumstances, okay things to do. Q Week 5 Reading Response This response asks you to apply what you learned this week about quoting and paraphrase to the essays by Miya Tokumitsu and Dave Zirin. Before attempting this exercise, make sure you interact with all the relevant materials, including Trimble's chapter on punctuation quotations. This exercise has two parts. Part 1 Choose either Tokumitsu's or Zirin's text and step into a short quotation (approx. 1-2 sentences). Underneath the quote, write a 2-3 sentence explanation of why you feel this particular passage makes a reasonable quotation.

James later said, "It was very emotional, an emotional day for all of us. Taking that picture, we're happy that we're able to shed light on the situation that we feel is unjust" (Zirin 1). His teammate Wade commented to the Associated Press. The passage makes a reasonable quotation since it has an introductory sentence. The opening sentence is supposed to lead the readers to the actual quote.
